Hi, having bought my 1989 998cc Auto mostly in boxes ! Can anyone post a photo of the underside steady bar please and how it fits with the transmission bracket etc?
Top one seems same as manual transmission.
Many thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew. I saw your post over on the Mini Forum and realised no one had replied to your post here. I posted on your thread on TMF as below.
I was intending to once I had some info for you.
Hi Andrew. I saw your post on the Auto forum a few days ago and have been looking for some info to try and answer your question. My autos are all in bits so couldnt post you a pic and didnt want to post a reply to say 'hi, I dont know'. Sorry no one got back to you. I think your post was overlooked but certainly not from ignorance.
Sorry again for not responding.

So - some months on, shell repaired and resprayed and engine fitted to powder coated subframe and slotted in carefully from underneath. All successful so far !! BUT - as I bought the car in boxes, I am really concerned that there is only one steady bar - master cyl plate to engine. This does not appear to be adequate. Can anyone either post photos or let me know what else supports the lateral movement of the engine please ? All parts books show lower restraints fitted to gearbox and clutch and attaching to lower front subframe, but will these fit an auto?? Many thanks - any info gratefully received.

I think we (on here) discussed this a while back, as far as i,m aware the late Jap exports which were spi,s had them on the front lower subframe, although i cant confirm this. My car is 6 months from its 4 year rebuild and i have a big box of various aftermarket engine steadies which i will be fitting in some guise. Your best bet is to pick up the type that connect from the thermostat to the bulkhead which are readily availiable. Like you mention one steady really is insufficent. Keep us up to date as i might wanna copy it. Terry.

I was told by someone who has one that there aren't any on the automatics. Now that mine is together and running I will look at it and maybe fabricate something to attach at the thermostat housing. There are some on the market like that, but not marked for automatics (although that shouldn't matter).

Mine only has the steady above the torque converter. I upgraded the bushings, but I see no need for another with my worn out 998.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com
What I used to do before my machine shop was cut and weld a top steady, use nickel rods and an arc welder for best reliability and strength. the brackets can be laser cut or made by hand, I have made a few to order and some for people with higher BHP however my lead times are a little extended at the moment as I am halfway through my move to new premises .... any volunteers more than welcome
