After stripping down my 2x 998 auto boxes ,both 1989 with. the same mileage (56,000). One I knew had the dreaded 3rd-4th flare, when I compared the two ,the the forward clutch had quite excessive wear on one of the friction plates, also the forward clutch piston rubber seal had hardened and had various cracks around the edge.check out photo,s.

Interesting Terry. I suppose its good to find the most likely cause to be the perishable parts and nothing major.
What are the brake bands like?

Yeah they still had meat on but all had some degree of degradation especially the wide band. I finished stripping my 1275 box today (the one I will be using). This looked brand new, bands were good, forward clutch was good, but when I stripped out the reverse and top clutch assembly ,of the 3 plates 4 sides were missing there friction covering. It came to me with no history and I was tempted to just bolt it in, lucky I did,nt. Once you get your head around the various components they are great to work on. Did you have as much fun as me getting to grips with the (c) clip on the reverse of the forward clutch assembly Stu?.
