Poppy, a 1996 SPI automatic Mayfair is not letting me select reverse, or park. The selector will move between D,3,2,1 & N, but won't move into R or P.
She doesn't have a collar to lift.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards
Johnny

Hi Johnny, I suspect the cable has slipped through the adjuster, this can only happen on the 1275 with park function as the 998 has a diffent type of cable adjuster that has a nut on the cable, but the 1275 " slides" through an adjuster. Check your cable adjustment at the gearbox end.

On checking my literature it appears some 1275,s do have the nut fixing, but yours being a 96 will definately have the slide through type.

Thanks for the information. Will my trusted Haynes manual help me or should I trust a friendly mechanic?

You,ll find Haynes won't cover it. Its not difficult to check/reset the adjustment. Jack up or put car on ramps, handbrake on select park. Under car remove metal cover (where gear selector cable enters gearbox). Where cable goes through linkage (end of cable) , there is a pinch screw, release the pinch screw 2-3 turns. The cable should now move independent of the linkage. Now you can pull the mechanism where its connects to the cable in the direction of the rear od the car. Double check car is still in park. Tighten pinch bolt/screw. Check make sure all gears select. Sorted. This may not be your problem, but it is the first to check. Good luck. P.s if you don't feel competent find someone you feel is.

After reading again your original posting,it sounds like a damaged cable binding.

Hi,
Many thanks for all your support. I took the car to someone who knows a lot more about minis than me. The problem was the cover for the gear selector (the one with PNR123D on it wasn't seated properly and was blocking the gear lever.
A quick oil change and Poppy and I drove to the IMM in Belgium without a hiccup.
Although my problem turned out to be different to suggestions, hopefully someone looking for help in the future may find this thread Abe be able to use the information.
Regards
Johnny

Well done, fella you managed to sort your problem without getting your wallet rinsed. The selector shroud has 4x spring clip,s the hold it down, usually a couple break and it (floats) around. How did you fix it down?.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com
Just to clarify a point on adjustment...
once you have found park you will need to check the lever position,
1) apply parking brake and foot brake to ensure car does NOT move. 2) from the neutral position (N) move gently to the reverse position (R) noting the position when it engages. 3) now do the same for gear 1 position (1) 4) now do the same but start in each gear R & 1 but move to the N position noting the position of the stick when it drops out of drive. 5) once done you need to balance the position so the drop out point is balanced on the stick position. 6) try all gears and of course park.
