Hi
Looking for a bit of advice on my wife's Mini Mayfair, it was registered in Jan 1989 and is an 85MY - 998 automatic. For the most it runs well but putting it into drive is not smooth. It goes in with a jump and then wants to move the car, the tick-over is at about 800rpm but at tick-over the hand brake is struggling to stop the car moving. I'm a hobbyist not a mechanic, in general the mini is not a complicated car so I can do most jobs but the gearbox has always been specialist and I'm not convinced whether this is a gearbox problem or the torque converter. So can I tell whether it is TC or box and if I can is it within the realms of hobbyist to fix. I happy to take engine out, strip it and take off TC or box as necessary.
Tom

Hi Tom, is the engine running well, perhaps your idle is too fast (although 800 don't seem too bad), you fould try turning it down a bit. Mine seemed like that when on choke, always fighting against the handbrake. Does it seem ok when your driving, is it only on idle that there,s a problem.

I agree. Is the car up to temperature when this happens and choke pushed in? Hand brakes are something that need constant adjustment on the auto if there is no P since this is your only P. Could the jump have anything to do with weak motor mounts?

Try gripping the top of the rocker cover and pushing and pulling while looking at where stabiliser bolts to block.

Thanks for the suggestions, will check the bottom two mounts, the top stabiliser had new bushes short while ago so that should be okay. However once in gear it seems to run well although thinking about it, coming back down the gears when slowing down is a bit lumpy.

Hi Thanks for your help it has made me think a bit more, so took it for another drive today I found the tick over has crept up to about 11-1200rpm. When the revs dropped it went in to drive okay and felt much better. I have taken the carb off and cleaned it up, the needle and jet seemed okay so I'll turn tick over down and see how I get on. many thanks Tom

Idle should be set to 800 rpm. 11 - 1200 is way too high.

I cannot stress this enough, no really I cannot, it needs to be stressed loads but In am only one man It needs to be readjusted because in moving the quadrant you have now thrown out the governor adjustment but also it can push the revs up because it is under load from the spring at the bottom.
