Got a '96 Mini SPI auto and possibly a silly question but I'm just wondering if the Park position should hold the car? Mine isn't and I'm wondering if the cable needs adjustment.

Hi Scrappy-do, yes the park feature should hold the car from moving as there is a locking arm (hooked claw) that engages with the toothed drum of the forward clutch drum. Cable adjustment must be looked . Is it starting correctly in park or do you have to wriggle it to get it to start. There is another adjustment for the locking arm but has to be done.with front panel of transmission off. Chech your cable adjustment first. Terry.

Just realised yours will probably wont have the fork at the end of the cable, yoirs will have a pinch screw instead. So should be easier.

Found the circlip/retaining ring was missing off the end of the selector rod meaning park was never able to engaged properly! Just got to find a replacement now!

I've adjusted it and even disconnected the cable and manually pulled the transverse rod as far as it will come and still no hold. Not sure what else I can do, did they all hold in park?

If it has a park function, it should hold in park, as there,s an arm with a hook that engages with square teeth on the forward clutch drum. This can be adjusted but not sure while in car as adluster is on reverse of valve block. It is viable that someone has fitted a 998 box but left in the selector from the 1275 box, in which case park function wont work. Although with this theory i dont think the levrr would still move to (p). That,s confused you, sorry.

I can confirm that my '93 holds in park, very well too because I keep forgetting to take it out of park when I need to push it and the car won't budge.

Just noticed the vehicle starts in any gear like the starter inhibitor has failed or requires adjustment. Does anyone know where it should be, earlier ones it's just off the selector rod (mine appears to just have a reverse switch) so it should be at the selector fork at front....I can't find anything though! Beginning to wonder if this gearbox when it was replaced a few years back for a second hand one has bits of both AP1 and AP2 on it!

Hi Scrappy, the inibitor switch adjustment on the spi is on the switch on the front of the gearbox. You unplug the connector and either screw it in or out, depending on your needs.

Very doubtful you have AP1 parts as the 1275 wouldn't turn in the case.... however you could very easily have a 998 AP2 or a 1275 AP2 that somebody has fitted a 998 or early 1275 forward clutch to, ie no park gear machined into the forward clutch drum, some have the section that would have been machined, it wouldn't be one of these as you would not be able to place the lever into park, however without the section the park pawl would not have anything to engage.
