Hi peoples! Im thinking of getting an electric fan for the mini as i use it everyday in London and you just never know when i will get stuck in traffic! Im keeping the mechanical fan and thinking about wiring the electric fan up to a switch on the dashboard for only when i need it. Iv read many ways of doing this but would it be easier fitting it straight to the radiator or under the wheel arch onto the inner wing? all advice welcome

Your best bet is to fit a 9" fan on the wheel side of the inner wing, will take a 10" at a squeeze depending on which type you pick. Remember to wire via a relay for safety reasons ( you dont want your car going up in smoke), you could also wire via an adjustable thermal switch, but thats being posh.

It will be very hard to get the fan in place with the mechanical fan in. I tried to do both.
My plan is to put one in the wheel arch, but I need to build a shroud to suck the air through the radiator, not around it. When I get time. I am currently running a tropical fan, but it doesn't cool well at idle speeds. Especially the low speeds of the automatic. I'm going to put the plastic 11 blade fan back on and see how it does.

I was able to pick up an early 90,s mayfair 1275 fan which bolts via 4x bolts to the outside of the inner wing, unlike the later fan that has the round appeture in the inner wing, at least i did,nt have to butcher the i/wing slats. Mine will be just for traffic backup. Have you considered a smaller fan pulley as fitted to 1100 clubmans. Got one on mine.

Any idea where I could find a smaller pulley? Not much for used mini parts in the states.

View AttachmentThat is the way it goes, although on mine, instead of drilled into the wing panel I have a bar at the top and bottom where that sandwiches the panel between it and the fan.

There is a bar on the top of the fan frame, although i,m not too sure if its upside down, as i could,nt find a pic of one fitted.

I don't understand why you need an electric fan at all. If you set your system up the way Todd does on the Austin America site, you shouldn't have any issues.

Its more of a safety back up, for when your stuck in London traffic.

My car has a factory fitted electric fan that runs off a switch at the bottom of the radiator. Rover clearly thought there was a need to fit this on the later cars?
