I notice when going from 4th gear and downshifting to 1st gear such as coming to a stop, the transmission is quite loud. Is this normal or a warning for later?

Perhaps the engine is shaking and the rubber bushes in the dogs bone are worn out. You can see what I mean when you ask some one to sit behind the wheel and pushing the acellerator pedal just a little bit to raise the rpm a bit. Then, with a foot on the brake push the shifter in reverse and immediately in the first gear forward. When you look under the lid in the engine room you can see the engine leaning backwards an forwards when the gears apply backwards, forwards. When you hear the noise what you are talking about, you need new rubbers. In that case; take the heavy ones made out of one peace of rubber and not the split ones. They are rubbish. You should alseo have a look at the botom f the engine/gearbox, where it sits in the subframe. Are all the bolts tstill there? are they tight? No runbber broken? The last you can see when you jack up the engine/gearbox on one side. Put a peace of wood in between the jeack and gearbox to spread the weight. When the rubber separates when you lift the block, you know what you have to do.

Yep, i think Wim is on the money, loud noises when changing down or pulling away quick tend to be stabiliser/engine mount related. Pretty easy to check out.
