So recently I notice that the oil pressure light was showing up on my mini. After changing the oil and replacing the switch I now notice that it only comes on when the engine is warm and at the points were the transmission shifts up or down. For example it will light up at 20km as it upshifts to 2nd and then go away until it hits 30km and upshifts to 3rd and so forth. The transmission itself is fine and actually changes gears with no issues.
Any advice? I searched a bit on the forum and saw that it could be a timing issue my mini does seem to run a bit rich would that be the cause?

Would,nt have thought this is timimg related, you,ve changed the pressure switch, the next thing to try is changing the oil pressure relief valve ( the plunger and its spring),there not expensive and fairly easy to change, its possible its not seating fully.

Are you sure you did enough oil in the engine an the richt density (10W40)?

When i renewed my relief valve and spring, the new spring was 5-6 mm longer, i know this may have no bearing as spring load pressures come into play and frankly that starts to get technical , also with my old spring in i was,nt actually experiencing any low pressure symptoms, i just replaced as i was rebuilding/renewing all moving parts and there so cheap, why not.

This is kind of what my one is doing as posted on another thread. I've just done an oil pressure test on the car = over 60psi on idle in Park or Neutral, but when you select R it drops to about 10psi for a second or two then goes back up to 55 once in gear. When selecting 1,2,3, or D it also drops from 60+ to around 20 for a second then back up to 60.
Not sure what this is suggesting other than once it is in gear and going the pressure is pretty normal.
Sounds to me like yours is doing the same.
Someone told me the oil pressure release valve may be stuck open - could be that, got to take the starter off to get at it though.

No still ongoing - not the switch, changed that, same result. Its not flickering, it comes on full on only when a gear is being selected. Oil pressure good normally, drops to 10-20psi when gear is selecting then back up to 55-60psi at idle (when cold). Must be something going on in the gearbox causing this I think - I guess maybe all drop pressure a bit when changing / selecting gears, but mine is dropping to a point where the light comes on.

You should really not be using 15W-40. As far as I know there is no 15W-40 oil that meets the JASO MA2 spec for wet clutches. The extra slipping of the clutches in an oil that does not have those additives will shorten your transmission life and shorten the intervals between changes. As far as the pressure, I'd really look at the relief valve. If you test the pressure at the filter fitting, you can see how much pressure you have.

Hey I know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same issue and wondering if this ever got sorted.

Hey I know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same issue and wondering if this ever got sorted. Retarded ignition can be a cause of low oil pressure but this is only noticeable once the oil is hot, ie not when first started, other reasons can be obvious seal leakage or pump failure, although pumps on the auto Mini are almost indestructible but they can still fail..

Turned out to be a plugged orifice in the main pressure regulator spool. Cleaned it and reassembled and no more issues.
