1986 998 mini 81000km
My mini has been having problems with oil burning and leaking. It seems that the problem is with the piston rings and primary gear seal. Additional I want to replace some of the gearbox as I have been having flare up at 3/4th gear and ma2 oil has made no change to it. Any advice for removing a mini engine and doing those three jobs?
Anything else I should look for?
Thank you

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com
Hi, If you intend to do the job yourself, you will need tools specific to the AP2 both to strip and to rebuild it.
If you need to work doing including the rebore and other engine work then please allow me to quote on the job.
Other than that, your 3rd to 4th flare is it happening in both manual mode and auto mode or just in auto mode ?

The flare up only happens in auto mode.

It has been flaring up since I bought it back in June last year. I have been driving it daily since then and also change the oil ever 1000 miles. The last owner used 15w40 and I also used 15w40 until October in which I changed to 10w40 ma2 oil.
I haven't touch the selector or any part of the transmission. The flare up happen always when the car is still cold and once it warms up it stop and only happens ever 4 or 5 shift up.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com You could try to remove and clean and refit the valve body, I suspect you have a sticky 3rd gear valve possibly due to debris in the unit, if a clean fixes it, then you will in all probability need to strip and rebuild the unit as the seals will have taken a bashing etc.... not to mention the band. From experience you will also find that the rest of the bands and plates will also be worn and close to failure. If it doesn't work then its a dig inside to fix all those other wearing parts or as I have found recently.... to my great cost a bush that seemed all ok but had spun when checked it was spot on, but then on use it could move and block off pressure holes enough to cause flaring you live and learn
