Hi All, I have a 1994 carburetor fed Mini automatic and I need to change the steering column bushes. I don't have a socket big enough to fit the steering wheel nut and I have tried to measure it with some vernier calipers but this is tricky as the steering wheel rim gets in the way. It seems to be around 28.6mm across the flats. What size socket do I need please?
Cheers,
Ian

I think it was 1 5/16" on my 1981 Mini. Maybe someone can verify on a newer car to see if it's the same.

It looks smaller than that to me but thanks for your reply.

I don't remember exactly, but it is either 1-1/4 or 1-3/8. My 1-3/8 socket got the most use, including the torque converter.

I found that a 30mm socket fitted well enough to remove and refit the steering wheel. The upper steering column bush was in pieces, so no wonder the steering wheel had so much play in it.
