Has anyone had issues with the big oil seal in the convertor housing, I changed it in Anne's mini some months ago because I thought it was leaking. The old seal had damage on the lip so I thought great but the oil leak is the same(bad) The seal was installed to the correct depth and I am sure the oil is not leaking from the bolt end of the convertor. The replacment seal was sourced from a bearing supplier and is marked 2.875 x 3.625 x 0.375 which appears to be correct. Manual minis had issues with flywheel seals in the early days which were fixed with the now familiar orange coloured seal(not the same size as the autos), any ideas?

Last time I needed a converter seal, I could not find one at all and resorted to buying a full gasket kit from the UK. The seals I could find locally at bearing supplies were close, but not close enough. Unfortunately this is probably the problem you have too.

Have you looked at JPat? www.jpat.co.uk/AP%20II.pdfIt's worth noting that they list not only a large seal, but also two different types of small as well (parts 57,58 on the diagram) Emma

Thanks for the advice, I have been emailing Jon Parfit at JPAT and may have got sidetracked or not I don't know yet, but ! I was checking out the converter that I am fitting to my spare box and it is leaking at the plate and screws at the converter rear, Jon mentioned an internal seal that fails, the snag about that is the converter needs to be cut open to change the seal(the converter is welded around the circumference) I may have two converters to do and because of the weight of the things it could be an expensive exercise even if I find someone in Aus to do it. This is the same problem as is written up in the Austin America site, I know the guy eventually fix the leak but it sounds more like luck than science. considering the age of most converters it could be a common problem. One last trick question, where does the large "O" ring supplied in overhaul kits go? its about 2" diameter and 3/16" thick.

A bit late but........
The large "O" ring is for the Piston and cylinder on the "top & reverse" clutch pack and fits over the centre on the inside of the piston & cylinder...

Thanks for the reply but sorry wrong, The extra "O" ring is thicker in section than the one for the T/R clutch centre. I know kits are made up to cover a range of model years but it still bothers me when I have bits left over.
Happy New Year, Ian B
