Thought I'd add a few images if the changes in design of the automatic gear selector quadrant as fitted to the early Mini. At launch in 1965, the chrome based quadrant had the longer gear selector and displayed 1,2,3,4. The later models of course having a shorter selector and keeping 4th - which was later deleted to show 1,2,3,D. I think this is some part has led to the confusion when some automatic Mini's are described as being either three speed or four speed.
