Hi.
I've just rebuilt an auto box for a customer, I've done loads on manuals and found a service manual to help. I contacted jpat and got the master overhaul kit and 3 brake bands, it really was that tired. The initial problem was slipping 4th gear.
Well now it's back together and in the car I have reverse only. When I select any other gear 1,2,3 or drive the engine revs drop but no forward drive. I assume I need to be looking at the forward clutch as it was a pig to rebuild and fit. I want to do that just through the end plate so my question is how to hole the forward clutch in place while fitting the end cover?
Cheers.

Tarija and Santa Cruz, Bolivia
There is a special tool ( I'm told), but I had to laugh when I read your post. It is the most frustrating thing. I did mine with two people and some little wires to line things up and hold them. Hours and hours of frustration.

Well that was stupid. I must have been bloody tired when I put the forward clutch together as I put all the levers in upside down.
Fingers crossed this solves it when I get it back together and fitted later on.

OK this is a puzzler now. Rebuilt the forward clutch. Fitted it. Put it all back together and still no forward drive. The revs drop at tick over when you try engage a gear but no forward motion. Reverse is still fine.

Sounds like it might be going into two gears at once. Check the shifter linkage.

Sounds like it might be going into two gears at once. Check the shifter linkage. I'll check that but I adjusted it as per the book specs. Cable in neutral. Selector rod right out then back in 2 clicks. Adjust so the bolt fits easily. I might even put it on stands and run it then try just using the selector rod. Got to be worth a try before pulling it out and apart again. Pity I can run a remote oil feed and then I could see what is going on with the covers off.

So I disconnected the shifter linkage and with the car on stands tried engaging gears. No difference, still no forward drive.
So its engine back out, forward clutch off and I'm going to test it's operation using compressed air. I have already tested the forward clutch out of a spare box I have so I know what I'm looking for. I'm either down to the following problems.
1. Forward clutch problem
2. Reverse shut off valve problem
3. Flap valve problem
I never stripped the valves out of the valve block as it didn't have an issue with selecting gears, just slipping top gear. By looking at the oil flow diagrams the AP service manual is pointing me in those directions.

Hi, I don't envy you heaving the power unit in and out, BUT did you do any oil pressure checks when testing the unit? There are plugs on the governor end cover which could give you an idea whether there is sufficient oil pressure to lock up the clutch, It does sound like the forward clutch is not holding. I assume you tried selecting 2nd and 3 rd manually to take the 1st gear sprag clutch out of the equation. One other thing, Is the oil level high enough? Jock

Jock Didn't do a pressure test as before I pulled it the only issue it had was a slipping 4th gear. I fixed it yesterday and fitted it today. I can pull and refit a mini engine (none injection) in just over a couple of hours....The big thing was having the will to do it again Anyway the issue was the forward clutch oil feed pipe. It was all lined up but when I started to put the cover on at the last moment it would bend rather than engage in the hole in the case. A screwdriver through the front cover held it in place for the last bit and the end cover jumped on home. I tested it on the workshop floor before fitting. Had drive in forward and reverse so risked fitting it today....The feeling of relief when the car drove forward was immense. Now I know at least some of the secrets I can always do more so it was a learning curve and one I'm happy to have overcome.

Glad to hear its fixed!! Much easier to put the governor end cover on while the engine is off, apart from being able to see the pipes and being able to rotate the output gear to get the splines in the clutch to line up. If everything is good the cover goes on quite easily, if things are not right the cover will not go on without a lot of force. IanB

I admire your resolve, i,m very patient, but even i had to take a couple of breaks while rebuilding mine, and i had the luxury of no engine on top, i remember Martin (mra) telling me to put some form of setting putting on that forward clutch supply pipe as it would always move. How much does jpats charge for the full kit nowadays?. And how is she driving now.

Jpats full kit is £280 delivered with bands extra. Bands are £40ish for recon and £60ish new each.
Drives great now thanks. Shifts when it should and no slip. Thought I had a slight squeal but it was from the brakes, which I aren't responsible for repairing so it's all good.
