Hi Folks,
Im trying to find out as much as possible about the differences between the automatic and manual engine.
I'm struggling to find any websites or documentation only what is on the AP site.
My understanding is that the crankshaft is longer for the torque converter and the blocks different.
I'm trying to find out as much as possible and would appreciate all and any info.
All the best for 2019

I believe the crankshafts are the same. The oiling in the blocks are different. Oil pump is much larger on the Auto since it provides for the engine and trans.

Hi,
Thanks for feedback. Are the cylinder head the same on auto and manual?
Anyone else got more info about the differences?
All ideas welcomed
Thanks

Hi, and welcome, 998 autos had a higher compression ratio and a bigger carburetor to compensate for the auto power loss, can't say about 1275's The oil system vis a vis auto/manual has significant differences, the oil filter is a cartridge to handle the higher oil pressure than the manual spin on, also has a greater capacity for the increased oil flow. The oil flow goes in different directions than the auto, oil from the pump in the auto goes via an internal pipe to the valve block and filter than by the external pipe to the cylinder block oil galleries, in the manual the oil flows from the(smaller) pump via the external pipe to the oil filter and then into the oil galleries at a different point, changing an auto engine into a manual or vice versa is not for the faint hearted but it has been done, probably easier to get the correct engine. Totally disagree, had a number of Minis over the years most manuals and they were a lot of fun to drive, I only have one mini now and its a 998 auto, brilliant little device, auto box works well, great in traffic and surprisingly fast. Jock
