Hi. New to this Forum! We live in Jersey, UK Channel Isles. We bought a 1998 Mini Kensington late last year. It's a 1275 auto recently imported from Japan. I drove it down from Newcastle to Portsmouth and all was well at motorway speeds, fast acceleration etc. Now, on slower urban roads, we have spotted an issue. On changeup from 2 to 3 - and ONLY on that change - it sometimes fails to engage 3rd cleanly. By that I mean it seems to slip for 1 to 2 seconds; revs increase with no speed increase. It does engage eventually. If you are going downhill slowly increasing speed it never happens. If you are accelerating hard, even uphill, it does not seem to happen. If you lift your foot off briefly it seems to help. If you put your foot down it seems to help. It does not happen for any other gear change - only up 2 to 3. Our local garage changed the oil and filter and checked linkages and declared all well. Hope it rings a bell with someone! Many thanks, Bill

Sounds like the the 3rd gear band is slow to grip, could be worn band or needing adjusting, or the valve block could be sticky or an internal oil leak to the 3rd gear servo. Assuming the garage put in the right oil the valve block could improve with use. It is possible to check the band adjustment in situ (just). Does the problem occur if you do the change manually ? if not then it sounds like a valve block issue. I presume you are correct about the 2-3 thing and not 3-4, flaring from 3-4 is quite common with these boxes. Good luck Jock

Thanks for your reply Jock.
Sorry for not getting back sooner as you took the time to try to help. Have been on sick relative duty!
Yes - definitely 2 to 3. Pam has another auto Mini (1984) and we are used to 3 - 4 flare. Have not tried the manual changeup, but will do so. Garage say they used the right oil.
Pam is using the car and we are watching out for improvements. It has to go back in for the airbag contact "strip" to be changed behind the s/wheel so I'll pass on your comments to him then and see what he can do.
Thanks again Jock - much appreciated!

Mine does the same, but has a few other issues too. Now I hear two things.................1) you can adjust the bands 2) you cannot adjust the bands, they should not be re-adjusted after initial setup ! Mine also has a oil pressure issue - when its less than about 6 degrees I am not getting enough pressure to get any gears and the engine oil pressure is low. Once its been running a few minutes or its warmed up its fine ! I suspect when the oil is thicker when cold the pump or something else is preventing proper flow, only makes sense to be the pump I guess. There is a thread running on Facebook discussing band adjustment. www.facebook.com/groups/456668241042401/

Cheers hennasxi.
Sorry - did not see your reply as have not been on the forum for a while.
Sounds like your issue is worse than mine!!
I'll have a look at that Facebook page and will pass it on to my friendly car man along with Jocks' previous advice.
Hope you get yours sorted!
Take care,
Bill
