Hi all, Please don't shoot me but I own a Austin a+ engine automatic trike. It was bulit by some one else then I bought it after a few others had it. So I have rewired it, cleaned painted it n serviced the engine, it on the road but it does not seam to want to change gear, top speed about 42mph, I have set the kick down level as per the Haynes manual but not much difference,
Any help would be very gratefully taken.

Hi, 42 mph, you would need to be in 3 rd or 4th to get to that speed, I assume wheel size/gearing is around normal, can you go through the gears manually? Jock

Jock Am guessing the wheels are correct, the trike was driven prior to me owning it. it was screaming it’s bits off at 40mph, as for manual use of the gears I have no idea of the postion to go thu the gears manual. as I sit on the trike the gear lever is in front of me, I pull it toward me for forwards & push the lever away from me for reverse, does that help?

Not much ! I suppose you do not have the normal mini gear quadrant which has reverse fully forward and Drive(auto change) fully rearward, Normally there is manual selection of intermediate gears between the two extreme positions. I can't believe that the previous owner has modified out the manual selection. I presume there is a cable from the selector to the gearbox bell crank which pulls a rod in and out of the G/box. I'm afraid your going to get on your hands and knees and have a look. Do you have some sort of Mini automatic manual? Jock

Do you think it is possible to get 40 mph in 1st or even 2nd? He says it is screaming. I wonder if it is possible the previous owner was thinking traditional shifting of an automatic and made his selector for R, N, D. D in this case would possibly be 1st or 2nd. I would highly recommend you find a shift mount and follow the manual for the proper cable adjust.

I have payed underneath as the gear stick was move but I have no idea of wot postion the gear shaft that’s near the bell housing should be, eg all the way out is??? Or all the way is??? That would help if I was told that, ty.

The rod at the gearbox is in reverse when fully out unless yours has a park position in which case fully in is park, first click out is reverse and next is neutral, rod fully out is drive , the clicks inbetween are the 1,2,3 manual positions. Jock

Well gents, thank you for u information n help, I now have a trike changes gear n runs well. Ended up having to make a new triangle gear changer as the std was worn , & probably due to the messing around with the shift mechanism, but just a bit of fine tuning to do
So nxt question , how hard is it to change the gear change seal??
Is it just qull old 1 out n replace??
