My lovely wife (whom i love) backed into my Mini in our driveway. She parked the Mini behind her new SUV (with its back up cameras, rear-view mirrors and backup sensors) and then backed right into it. Upon cross examination she admitted she was on the phone and not paying attention. It was a low speed impact that did very little damage (bent in the grill) bit since "the accident" (as I call it) the Mini will not start. My Mini is a 92 SPI so it has the Modular Engine Management System. I noticed that the relay Block was clicking so I ordered a new one (damn expensive) and installed it, but still no love.
Because it was in park at the time of "the accident" I was wondering if it could be the starter inhibitor switch?
I am stumped as to what could have happened to my little car.
As always everyone's help is greatly appreciated.

Ah yes they do these things, dare not critisise thou, I know very little about these relatively new fangled minis, when you turn the key is there nothing or does it turn over but not start? if its just a click then its in the start inhibit circuit, the gear lever is in the correct position? If it churns and no start the its probably engine management. Jock

I think the inhibitor switch on an SPI is on the lower front of the gearbox, so it is entirely possible it was hit in the accident. Maybe check in case the wires got damaged/disconnected or if the switch itself is damaged. There should be two wires connected to it.

we have checked the inhibitor and it is not the problem. At this point any ones ideas are greatly welcomed.
When you turn the key you can hear the new relay clicking, but no start. We jumped the solenoid and it turned over, so it is something between the key and the solenoid. Maybe the power supply to the relay block? I am guessing here, so welcome whatever guesses you guys may have.
Thanks

Have you checked the inertia switch?
See this minispares article.

According to the description on that site, you cannot even start the engine. I would think this would also prevent the key from activating anything. You jumped the solenoid but did you check its operation?

I did check the switch mentioned. I hope to work on it this weekend. I have a friend who is a good automotive electrician and I hope he can help me track down the problem.
Thanks for all the guesses.

Thanks for all the guesses. ?Did she apologise to your Mini ? if not then that is 100% why she won't start..... but as your last post was October I am hoping you fixed the issue ?
