hi there
my 998cc 1988 auto mini city has gradually started this problem, that when i put the gears into drive or reverse it either tries to cut out or when it does decide to move then it struggles.
now trying to sort this problem out tonight we have tried to adjust the idle on the carb and now it wont even turn over. when it is in neutral.
we have made a loop on the solonoid and it does kick in but once its kicked in , it reverts back to the original problem and wants to cut out, or very jumpy when try to reverse or move forward.
i turned the engine off and removed the loop and it will not start again.
does anyone have a clue what this could be or have they had this problem themselves?
many thanks

Oh boy, no one is trying to answer this question. Let I have a try. The problem started gradually. Since how long do you have this car? (Are you new?) Do you change the motoroil yourself? When did you the last time? What oil do you use for that? Do you know the particular way by which you have to check te oil level? You adjusted the idle. Is the engine turning over now faster or slower? Do you know that there should be some engine oil in the top of the carburettor? Are you sure that all the nuts that tighten the inlet and exhaust (manifold) tubes to the head of the engine sit tight. And the nuts which tighten the carb to the manifold? The axle of the throttle in the body of the carb. Sits it 'roomy' so that air from outside can enter there and weaken the mixture so much that the engine starves? Could be the engine is getting 'false air' which means there is too little fuel in the intake air to run on. Are you sure that the intake airfilter is clean and not clogged. This would make the mixture too rich and that can give problems with burning. And there is a new problem rising from behind the horizon. We are obliged with new fuels that are mixed up with ethanol. Bio fuels. Now we are confronted with clogged up fuel lines. In paticular, the line from the tank to the pump. It is the lowest part in the system so, water is remaining there and with the new fuel it is a perfect combination to grow 'vegetables' in the fuel line. To check if this is your problem you have to undo the flexible fuel line that goes to the intake of the fuel pump. Take it in your mouth and blow. When you feel quite a resistance, renew the fuelline under the car. Some cars from this period had coated walls inside the tanks to resist rusting. That coating is getting weak from the ethanol and gets loose from the wall and sinks to the bottom of the tank. At the lowest spot BMC made a 'inside' filter that gets clogged by the sinking coating. When you will be sure it is not this problem that is obstructing. You could try and blow the tank. Undo the flexible hose that goes from the tankbottom to the fuel line under the car. On top off the tank there is a little pipe for venting the tank. Put a finger on the outer end so that no air could escape there. Put your mouth in the filling opening and make sure there can't escape air alongside your skin. Blow three times your longs empty. Now you can feel how long it takes to let the pressure out via the little pipe at the bottom where you took away the flexible hose. When you answer the questions and try out what i advised you to do and write down here what you experienced, I will look a few times per day what you have to tell here.
