Hi Apologies as I’m new to the forum... I have a 1985 Mini in for restoration which has the auto box... the car itself has only covered 40k but reading other post this appears to be inline with issues with the auto box... I’ve tried to contact Mark at MRA but don’t appear to be able to get a valid contact number - is he still in business?? Failing that is there anyone that can help please... I’m looking for either: Gaskets and seal kit - Complete Someone to completely refurbish my box (out of the car and split from engine) Or a Reconditioned gearbox.
Would appreciate any help and advice so I can move forward with the project!!
Many Thanks Lee

Well Lee. Are you sure that it is nessecary to rebuild the gear box? Most of the time these automatics are reluctant to behave properly after sitting for an awfull long time. Do you now for how long the engine and gearbox 'stood still'? When it stood still for months perhaps years it is likely so that there is nothing wrong exept that the oil has to be refreshed and the sticking innerts has to come loose again. When you open it up it is almost certain that you will find nothing wrong, nothing that you could 'repair'. You must realise that the labyrinth where the gear selections are made stands up vertical against the wall of the box. When the oil level in the sump was low all that time the car was not used, the oil in the labyrinth went down too and in place of the oil came air. And when the air is pressed it gives way, it is not firm like oil. So the gear ganging is only restored when the air got out. So, before you open it, try to get it running and working proper by using the car. Take your time and be patient. Refresh the oil, refresh the oil filter. Use 10W40, nothing else. Repeat the oil change because oly after three or four cahngings the remaining old oil in the system will be thinned down accordingly. The totque converter contains about a liter oil and that doesnot come out when you undo the carterplug. And this liter oil only mixes up with the fresh oil you put in when you drive the car. A hundred mile each time between refreshings. Set the oil level in the proper way: After running the enige really warm, shut it down, wait ten minutes and pull and read the dipstick. When you read the oil stories on this website you'll find that nowadays we use engine oil ment for motorcycles wit 'WET' clutches. Do so.

Whilst bearing in mind the above advice, if you do need parts then Somerford Mini do some gaskets, seals, etc. The main supplier for AP box spares is Jpat. Good luck.

Hi Thank you for the advice so far...... I did think an oil change would solve some issues once I realised how difficult buying new seals had become... The only problem I have is this is a customers vehicle. Once I got the engine started and running it was removed and the car was stripped to a shell and sent away for dipping.... I really don’t want to paint the car refit engine to mess about and have to remove the gearbox to sort issues as this cost will be passed on to the customer... thx lee
