Hello, I have just bought a 1991 Mini automatic. When it arrived in a trailer I tried to reverse it off. The engine started ok with choke but when I put it in reverse the engine stopped. Not stalled - it stopped suddenly with a clunk and from reasonable engine revs. . I tried a few times and then we pushed the Mini off. It also did this but less dramatically in forward drive. When the car has been run some time on the road it gets much better -still a bit of a clunk. The car has done 28000 miles with full history last oil change by London Mini Company a few 100 miles ago. Otherwise it changes gear ok with no slipping and good power. The engine seems ok. I have ordered some JASO MAZ 10-40 oil but any other ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

Has it been sitting unused for a long time?

I'm having similar issues.
I got mine from Japan, but took about 4 mths to get, and not sure how long it sat before that. Mine drives in all gears except reverse. WHen you put in reverse, it hardly moves even when pressing the gas. Changed the oil and still same, but now when i turned the AC on, the car shuts off, so i tried starting again without AC, and it still shuts off after a few mins. Seems to be something electrical with the starting issue, but the reverse has me puzzled.
any ideas? mike

Reverse might be a misaligned shift cable. The other is a mystery to me.
