I don't have my manual in hand but I do recognize this. Proper name I don't know but its function is anti reverse valve. Found inside the shaft to the clutch assemblies. Works with reverse and top gears. i have suspected it in my car for some time. always wondered if it was responsible for flaring between 3rd and top gear changeover.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com Flaring maybe due to the bush at the end of the forward clutch where it enters the aux pump body being worn thus allowing the pressure to drop off, try a pressure gauge on the auxiliary bleed port...

Martin. I'm not sure where and what you mean by bush at the end of the fwd clutch. Is there any way you could post a picture of it and its placement?

Upon further research I found that I was referring to the reverse shut-off valve. Is this a picture of the governor valve?

If it's not the governor valve then it must be the regulator valve (assembled)

According to my BMC 1100/1300 manual (ADK 3615, 17th edition) it is from all MKII (MKII and MKII B) valve chests.

So go on then Martin, why highlight this particular valve? As I'm just about to dismantle my valve block is this one that causes the most problems and one that I should pay particular attention to?

So go on then Martin, why highlight this particular valve? As I'm just about to dismantle my valve block is this one that causes the most problems and one that I should pay particular attention to? I would not dismantle your VB as the valves often "kick" up a microscopic burr that will if it moves cause that valve to seize up thus potentially causing damage to9 your transmission, just strip the cover and steel plate, don't lose the flutter valve, (a tiny piece of flat steel plate) and the VB off the main assembly, then careful NOT to turn it over soak for 48 hours in paraffin changing the paraffin until it runs clear and clean, then soak in engine oil after draining the paraffin out of the VB and leave the oil to soak in, then reassemble. The valve in this picture is just one I picked on as I was going through the drawings and re-creating new parts for manufacture.
