Hope to be ready to try and get mine running soon. I got the engine a year ago and the chap said it was running well but had been sitting in his garage a couple of years. So far I've added 3 lt. of oil which has brought it up to 'MAX' on the dipstick. I'm thinking to spin it, plugs out, for about 10 seconds then check level and top up. Do this a few times to get the filter filled and see what sort of oil pressure I get before seeing if it will run.
Any thoughts or suggestions much appreciated.

Hi, Yeah sounds fair, I would squirt a little oil in each bore before you start, Is the motor free to turn over? probably worth checking the oil filter is OK. I put gauges on both the engine and the filter point. I have had a couple of occasions where sellers have been less than truthful you just never know, before you actually run the engine you should check distributor/spark, carburetor, cooling, alternator, the list goes on! Thanks Jock. I think I've done all I can to give the engine a fighting chance regarding fuel, ignition, etc. It's the gearbox side of things I'm concerned about. I was all ready to spin it up this afternoon but then chickened out when I suddenly remembered reading somewhere about priming the oil pump.
I'll have a search this evening and see what I can turn up on the subject. I've also found the responses to Andy Mynott's recent posts on the fb group interesting.

Well I got the oil pump primed OK. Spun it on the starter and within 15 seconds got good pressures, 55psi engine and 140psi at the filter. Checked the oil level and added another litre to bring it up to max. then connected up ignition and a fuel supply. Started superbly so ran it for a couple of minutes, it was just starting to settle down and come off choke when there was a screech from the alternator/water pump and then the oil filter seal gave out and it deposited about a litre of brown sludge over my feet before I could pull off the ignition feed. Oh well, two steps forward and one step back. Normal rate of progress for any classic.

How did you prime the oil pump. ?

How did you prime the oil pump. ? I'd taken the filter housing off so I could clean the groove where the seal sits. Then squirted oil down the front hole where this would mount, and rotated the engine backwards by hand. As I rotated the engine the oil was sucked down so I just kept adding more oil as I turned the engine. After a few squirts the oil stopped disappearing so I assumed that was the pump primed. Seemed to do the trick but I've no idea if this is the correct procedure.

I have not primed the pump apart from lubricating it while assembling the engine but for my spare engine that had sat for 9 years after assembly and not run I primed the engine system by making a fitting for the engine oil pressure hole (1/8 BSP) and adding a 500 ml tin and filled it with oil and left it overnight to drain down through the crank and cam bearings.
