The first thing which strikes me is - gas struts on a Mini bonnet?
I think it's likely the force of the struts is likely to cause damage to the bonnet. These struts are made to support weight - something the bonnet on our beloved little cars doesn't have. The bonnet is also not particularly rigid either, so unless you've stiffened it somehow I think you are asking for trouble.
Assuming you have some 'low power' struts, I would suggest you look at where other cars have them mounted. If you follow the general method of geometry, you'll note they are not immediately anchored by the hinge of the tailgate/bonnet/bootlid. They are in fact positioned away from it.

no worries, i brought the thread back to life earlier! they're mounted on the hinge and when they're closed they dont have as much pressure as when they're out, prob more likely to do more damage with just 1 than if i had the 2 but just a bit annoyed that i didnt get them a couple of months ago cos thay said they were testing new stock and when i do get them they're still not gonna fit!

dont fit them!!, i had a set and have also been told by many people who have had them, they damage your bonnet, they look good but unless you have a "low powered" strut it will do more damage that they are worth. charlie.

tbh cant c how they can do too much dame=age, the strut is connected to the hinge which is at least 3 mm steel and over the length of the bonnet it cant really completely foook it up, any pics of the damaged bonnets???

Hi Dan ill be honest Ive never used them but was once thinking of some myself Now Ive decided against them Its not this thread though i guess I'm worried if the bonnet catch ever failed with the standard set up you've got a chance of pulling over before the bonnet blows up Whereas with struts its likely if the catch ever failed the struts would immediately push the bonnet up onto your windscreen However others have used them and i guess if you used other methods to safeguard your bonnet catch like locks or bonnet pins you would be fine I'm quite happy with the standard hinges however the original bonnet prop is a bit fiddly Ive seen hinged bonnet props on others cars which fold away when the bonnet is closed but lock in an upright position when the bonnet is open and it would be interesting to see if such a system could be adapted for the mini Good luck with your struts hope you get things sorted Huggz Jodie

cause i can only get the 1 on its now putting the angle of the bonnet to the front left so rather than start faffing around making new brackets i think i'l return em for a full refund and replace the gas struts with fold away steel struts thanks anyway guys, i wanted them to work but it seems that they just dont fit at all and u lot were right!!!

thanks for that. I was toying with the idea of the struts but have gone off it now.
