Mk1 Mini auto clunking when going into 'drive'

Hi everyone, I'm now the proud owner of a mk1 mini 850 auto. She's an absolute beauty!

She drives really well, very smooth gear changes etc. The only little thing is that she clunk's when going into drive or 1st gear. Performs perfectly other than that.

Anyone ever experienced this?

To me it is fairly typical. You may have your idle too high. I set mine to 500rpm.

Bit of a late response, but as above idle too high, and if that doesn't cure it then your forward clutch pack clearances are too large, the book says up to 0.90mm however 0.45mm maximum is better

What does the Engagement Control Valve do and can it be fitted to transmissions that do not have it?
Also, do you know approximately what years have it installed?

Hi Mark,

It is supposed to make the upshifting smoother,but in reality can make it harsh due to accelerated wear, It could be retro fitted but in all honesty I normally remove them and just build the transmission with more care and get better results. As for years I am not entirely sure but about 68 to 73 I think, and then only to austin 1300 units.

The issue was indeed the idle speed being too high. Set at about 600 rpm now and is very smooth going into drive now. Thanks all
