My name is Michael and I just bought a 1999 JDM Rover 1.3i in Okinawa Japan. Without doing any research, I thought the transmission is like any other, but I quickly found out that i assumed wrong. It runs great in reverse, but no forward movement although the engine sounds great.
I came across this site thru the ultimate mini restoration manual via autominiregister.proboards.com. I imagine I'll be needing some good advice once I start tearing into the engine removal and eventual breakdown so I can rebuild it. I'm guessing after a lot of reading that the forward clutches have worn out, but I was wondering if there were any less intrusive means of checking, verifying or ruling out some other, most simpler cause. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be great. I'm determined to save this mini and maybe give her lil engine some extra power in the future.

Hi and welcome, The forward clutch is probably the weakest item in the autobox, you do not say what mileage the car has done which would be interesting. as you have a manual I suggest you carry out a pressure/stall test which will tell you if its an oil pressure problem or clutch failure, I assume you have tried the forward gears in "manual" with no success. Hi Jock, Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, I just received the manual in the mail a few days ago. The Haynes manual basically said to rebuild the automatic is very difficult and left it at that. Fortunately, the Mini Restoration Manual provided much more detail and a couple links which fortunately led me here. I'll be following your recommendations this weekend if the weather holds out. We have a massive typhoon about to hit or skirt by us. I'll check the mileage and report back later. There is only a slight hint of forward movement when placed in any forward gear. Pressing the accelerator has no affect.

Michael. If you want more technical data/manuals, I have a package that I have offered many of the members here. It includes a mini manual, technical rebuild info for the AP auto trans and some extras on the SU carb and Lucas electrics. All I need is your email. You may want to quickly review the information on this website: www.austinamericausa.com/Also if you check the How To section here there is an offer for an extensive manual by another member. Cheers, Mark

Group, I was thinking about this issue and wondered if you could give Michael some feedback on an idea I have. Is it possible his reverse break band is dragging?

Jockduck, you were asking about the mileage, it 14,732km. That doesn't seem like very much. Maybe it has turned over once already.
I've finally got everything to do the pressure test. Now im looking for the place to test in on the engine. These jdm engines are packed with stuff in the way. I'll let you know what the results are as soon as im able to do the check. Also, I believe my transmission is an APII since it is a 1999. Thanks to all for their help and advice so far.

Michael, if you mean the Foulis manual, it is very scarce and usually very expensive. I luckily found one about three years ago but they are even more scarce now. If you want the jdm or something close for a manual, check out this link 1993 mini manual

Mark,
You are the man! Thank you so much! Thanks for emailing the link. Now I can start figuring out how to pull my engine and which parts/tools are needed to swap the forward clutches.
It's time to start collecting the correct parts/tools and knowledge to get this done right.
Everyone that I have found here in Okinawa Japan that works on mini's just say throw the automatic away and replace it with a manual transmission, but i'd like to preserve this lil automatic and make it bullet proof so others will also want to hold onto them.
Mike

Glad to help. If there is any other literature you are interested in and I have it, just let me know. That's why we are all here.
You have me wondering how important it is to get a network going to save as many parts as possible from these people who do rollovers. If we could get the Japanese and Americans and any other people of other countries together in a salvage system it would extend the life of our wee cars immensely. Some 'A' engine enthusiasts have gone to exchange systems where they ask for old parts for recycling and send out refurbished parts to the donor. I believe Martin of MRA Minis is one who has done this with many parts.
speaking of Martin, you will find that likely all 'special' tooling you need to rebuild your auto box is available thru him. You will likely also find he has any parts you might need to replace.
Cheers Mark
