When my automatic is cold and I start it, the engine oil pressure gage (0-80 psi) pins itself over 80psi. It takes some time before it finally drops down to about 50psi. The cold pressure is so great that the oil passes out of the filter canister seal until it drops to about 65-70psi. What might be wrong? The low pressure regulator?

Hi, Yes 80+ is too high, my Australian Leyland Manual states that engine oil pressure is 40-60 psi, my mini starts cold with 55 psi and gradually fades to 48 psi when hot at normal car speeds, I get 30 psi at idle in Neutral when hot but this drops to 10 psi if I select R. The feed pipe to the T/C has a restrictor so I don't think the low pressure valve has much effect on engine oil pressure. I think your engine oil pressure relief valve is either stuck, has been incorrectly shimmed or the wrong spring fitted. The engine relief valve is the end of the line as far as the oil supply is concerned. Jock

As far as I know the engine is virgin, never been cracked in any way. Nor has anything else. So I am going to assume the pressure relief valve may be stuck.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com It can be caused by debris that gets stuck between the piston and its bore, but normally they stick open and not closed as the oil pressure is far greater than the spring pressure, ie the oil pressure moves the spring to a point in equilibrium. High oil pressure can be caused by damaged or dirty valve body, the good news is on your car it is quite straight forward to remove and soak in parafin or other oil based cleaner, ie not brake cleaner as it dries leaving the fine dust in situ
