Hi guys had a JDM Rover Mini 1996 for a couple of months had just done quite abit of maintenance work but I do not have the final drive. P,R,N,1,2,3 all work just no D and if you put it in D its just in 3rd the whole time doesn't change gears at all unless you manual select them. the oil is Ma spec 10w40 has anyone had a problem like this ?

Hi and welcome, it sounds like your gear cable is incorrectly adjusted, I assume you have a manual the procedure is in there. sounds exactly like the problem I had myself last week when I did not pull the gear lever fully into D . Jock

Thanks I have learnt a lot from this forum I have setup the shift cable and made sure every thing is lined up correctly reverse and neutral and park are all lined up and work just nothing when I go past 3rd I am thinking the valve body might need to be overhauled

Hi again, Its a bit of a puzzle, I had a look at the hydraulic flow diagrams but can't see anything obvious, the valve body is usually reliable, you said you had done some work is any of that relevant ? Jock

The governor unit gasket was replaced since it was leaking and the two input seals where replaced by a auto transmission workshop but the box wasn't going thru the gears before hand. I spoke to a auto trans place that's done a few mini autos and he thinks it's possibly the valve body is a bit gummed up since it won't shift at all. And not knowing what oil was being used in Japan

I have read your symptoms again and the valve block is certainly a candidate, the fact that R works means the Top/Reverse clutch is working, its possible the governor may be stuck on its shaft in the 3rd gear position, I had it stuck in 1st once, could drive in all gears in manual including 4th because its an early car. I unstuck it by poking around through the governor kickdown hole at the back of the G/box it had rusted slightly through lack of use but I did have the power unit out of the car. Jock
