Hi all
my gear selector was harder than it should be to move between D/N/R etc but it now won't select R and drive backwards at all and N is in the position where R should be. Anybody had this ? any suggestions what might be the issue?

Was this a sudden change? For some reason the overall distance has changed. Look for something that has come lose or apart. If bot that then the cable has become elongated.

Was this a sudden change? For some reason the overall distance has changed. Look for something that has come loose he lever was or apart. If bot that then the cable has become elongated. The lever was hard to move back & forth so I lubricated the pivot in the selector 'gate' box in the car then moved it back & forth a few times. It then became easier to move. It was pretty much straight after that it couldn't select R. So your thoughts of a stretched cable would fit in with that.

Check for components which may have loosened also. Might be hard to find another cable or it may be costly.

Got a used cable & selector off eBay £25.At least then when underneath the car if the cable is at fault I have a replacement. If I don't need it I'll just eBay it on again

One thing that is very important to do and that is to keep a stock of spares. Parts will eventually be next to impossible to find.

Now have a decent used cable (actually have two of them) any tip/pointers for fitting? i.e. have it in N on the selector then how you know the gearbox actual selector is in N too?

Without the selector in you can maually feel all indents starting with reverse. Your manual has a good description.

All done! Decent user cable fitted. Found the adjuster nuts were loose so the cable had moved!
On another note. It’s an A+ engine so I assume also a later box than the car itself. Would I have a 3 or 4 speed box? The in car selector say 3 but to drive the feels like 4

Hi, its a 4 speed box, only the early cars had 4th selectable as a manual position, later cars omitted that position but 4th is selected in "D" when the speed is right. kinda makes sense. Jock

Mine is a 1968 Australian build and it has 1-4 manually selectable, The gearbox and selector need to be matched. Jock
