Suggested first steps in performance upgrades???

Hi all
I’ve just bought my first Mini and have zero experience with engines etc but I bought the car to learn and spend time with my son who’s 14 has mental health issues but loves modified cars.
So what are the recommended 1st steps for a 998 Mini Mayfair auto that’s not to horrendous (I’m a manufacturing engineer buy trade so not totally incompetent) just no automotive experience yet! Happy to read up and get my hands dirty!
