Is is relatively easy to remove the final drive pinion from an automatic’ box? The Haynes manual covers removing the diff and actual final drive on the auto but not the pinion (it does for the manual) and obviously they need to be swapped as a pair.

Hi, The job is fairly straight forward when you have the right tools, I made a tool with a couple of old clutch plates and a spanner for the nut, I think there is a lockwasher to deal with. I heat up the nut with a pencil butane torch until it smokes and then try to undo, I have done a couple and they come apart OK, one thing to check is whether the bearings have been spinning in the housings, the outer rings where you can see them will be polished. There is a shim involved to ensure the bearings run with a little preload, when the bearings spin this changes the end clearance and the bearings will have some shake, I adjust the shim thickness to compensate and use loctite to retain the bearing outers. Why do you want to change it?

I can be contacted on sales@ap2.world This is the correct tool for the job VL Churchill 3rd gear spammer - 18G1095 In answer to your question it is a full strip, but that's not a bad thing as you get to check the internals for wear and tear.

Are the crownwheel and pinion in an auto box the same as in a manual - so you have the same choice of ratios?

I thought there were 2 ratios, one for Minis and one for 1100/1275. Jock

I thought there were 2 ratios, one for Minis and one for 1100/1275. Jock There are three ratios. One for about 1965 and earlier. one for 1275 SPIs. Everything else used the same 3.27 ratio. Switching the 1275 SPI ratio into a 998 engine is a bad idea as there won't be enough power. I don't imagine there are many of the first ratio around.

I can be contacted on sales@ap2.world
3.48 3.27 2.76
However the idler gears are not 1:1 so it's not comparable to a manual gear set
