ever since i got Dennis back he has run badly, he starts and idles ok but as soon as you put any revs on he backfires and misfires, the chap i bought him back off had the same problem. i'm sure when i had him the first time he ran fine cos i remember my friend driving him up and down the street a few times now you cant get him to move more than a few feet before he's popping and banging again. anyone got any idea what the problem might be and what i can do about it ?

Could be a number of things Is this with the manual engine or your replacement auto? If its the manual don't worry you can always use it as a doorstop ;D ;D Not too sure about the backfiring but misfiring id put down to the plugs, dizzy, leads etc Think we need one of our experts here Huggz Jodie

Have you check all the breather connections to the carb. The manifold may need tightening or the Servo vacuum pipe (if you have one) might have a split / crack in it. It has also the symptoms of a big air leak on the inlet side, making the mixture very leanresulting in misfiring when opening the throttle and popping when on overrun.

problem is with manual in it, would make a good doorstop ;D am leaving it in until i've done all the other bits and maybe even until it's mot'd. have just realised after asking a few people that remember, someone has put an aftermarket air filter on it i guess if they didnt get it set up properly that might be causing the prob, i might put the old original filter back on and see what happens i've found it in the shed with all the spare parts that came back with him. thanks for replies guys i'll let you know how i get on

I'd be checking the dashpot oil first, then move onto the vacuum hoses. It sounds like its running lean.
Wait!!
Just seen that you've changed the air filter?
Have you blanked off the breather to the carb? If theres an open hose stub on the carb then thats your problem, blank it off with a small length of hose and a bolt!!
Also the increased air flow to the carb(maybe!!) may also be causing a lean mixture.
Failing all this its the usual suspects, plugs/leads/points etc.

Just a thought but is it still registered as an Auto? If not you could run into difficulties A member of my local mini club had a 1275 clubman saloon and had it converted to a 998 as its going to be passed to his son as his first car(insurance too high on 1275) Anyway thinking he could just send off the V5 for amendment he duly informed him he couldn't simply swap engines Apparently they wont amend the details unless you get a receipt for the purchase of said engine and an engineers report or a garage to fit it So if its still registered as an Auto put the auto back in it and get it an Mot with the auto in it If its been registered as a manual now put the auto in and get it Mot,ed as it will then get tested with that engine number and apparently its then easier to get the V5 changed apparently Only what ive heard but might be worth considering? Besides you can then use that strange three pedal contraption as a doorstop ;D ;D ;D

Heres a tip, when you change the V5 from manual to auto don't send it by post.
Take in to your local DVLA office and get them to do it using their internal mail(if they query it just say you were told you had to give it into them)
There been reports of people doing it this way and not having to prove a reciept or engineers report.
Its either that they were lucky or that because the V5 came through the internal mail system it wasn't queried??

thanks for all the advice guys i will certainly bear all those things in mind. haven't done much to Dennis as my damn toyota townace, my daily drive, has decided to be naughty and play up leaving me with no transport whatsoever so i've been trying to put that right without much success. i've given up for today as i've got to work on it outside and i'm sure i've got flippin' hypothermia. so hot choccie and fluffy slippers time
