Hello All,
Could someone tell me the difference between an autobox from a Austin America to say a modern Mini autobox? What internals were changed to make it a better transmission? I have a chance to upgrade my existing 1969 Austin America box to a more modern one and wanted to make sure it would be a even swap over without much modification. Thanks again!

From what I understand just minor tweeks and changes along the way. Only real changes was the diff gearing ratios for the different models. Call JPAT at: 1954-852772 in the UK they still have the parts for AP Boxes and could best answer your question

Though i cant tell you all the differences i cannot see any reason why you cant use a late model AP transmission from either an A+ Carb or Injection Engine Your Engine is Basically the same as ours apart from the fact its probable pre A+ I'm guessing? The last Autos ever available were the Single Point Injection like Boris and the only difference between the last Carb/First injection models was a throttle body Injection and a different inlet Manifold in place of the Carb If the ADO 16 1300 had still been in production i think it would of been fitted with the Last type transmission Good Advice from kiwihcn JPAT will probably be able to answer your questions and likewise so will Martin (Mra Minis) its Worth checking with Martin as there may be replacement parts that exceed the spec of the last Transmissions as often re manufactured parts are often made with improving the parts they are replacing in mind

Hi Steve, There are many modifications from your existing unit to say a late SPi unit, however the good news is that it is possible to change over The bad news is that you would need to have a similar shift to the SPi, preferably the SPi shifter itself would be the route to go.... As for the governor control, the rod would need changing or at least modifying unless you wish to keep the SPi induction, injection and exhaust system So if you where planning on using the whole system from an SPi then the selector / shifter would need carefull investigation due to the many different types available for the Mini / Metro / Austin 1100 & 1300 (America) ranges
