I would check the state of your battery - cold weather can kill off a 'sick' or tired one - try charging it. Also ensure you have good earths.
As regards the lack of resistance on the gear selector, that's perfectlyt normal.

Emma's Right this kind of weather can kill off a battery of Unknown age and Condition Ours died last winter and we had exactly the same "Clicking" noise and i was about to get an exchange Starter until we decided to humour Boris and Jump start him from another Battery ;D He then started first time but did the same several times for another week or so until we gave in and replaced the battery Try Jumping it from another Battery before going down the new starter road Huggz Jodie

It could be frozen... However if it was then generally unless the starter system is in bad health it would still start....... although the water pump would probably not turn and your drive belt would very quickly fail This is really easy to check..... simply remove your rad cap if the coolant is still liquid and not solid ice then assume battery.

My clubman was doing that. Turned out to be the ring gear was worn on the flywheel. New one put on and BINGO!

My starter motor sticks now and again....
But I agree it could be the battery that is foxed in this weather!! But if the battery is ok then it could be the starter motor that is jammed. It also makes a "click" sound if this is the problem. There is a little square stub about 10mm across sticking out the back of the motor. Try turning this with a spanner (to turn the motor shaft round and free it off). Or if this doesn't work it could be the bendix gear inside is stuck. For this take off the motor and clean out the bendix drive and regrease. Or if this fails it could need a new bendix fitting.

If you want to check if the engine is "frozen" you can turn it over by hand. I've tried to do this as per the Haynes manual - by turning the fan belt. But I'm too much of a wimp to do it!!!
The way I use instead it to take out the little rubber bung on the side of the flywheel cover. Inside you can see the flywheel teeth. Then carefully lever the flywheel round by putting a screwdriver through the hole and onto the teeth. This should at least show that the engine will turn and you can also see the state of the flywheel teeth - if you are patient enough to turn the fywheel right round which is a bit tedious!
