temp gauge just like the oil light is fed by a sensor that bolted into the cylinder head just below the thermostat it could be a faulty sensor but with you saying it rights itself when you tap it I'm wondering if its a bad contact or earth or something?
Anybody else have any ideas?

Check the wiring and connections carefully - it might be a loose connection........... ............. although if the act of tapping the gauge causes it to work,it may be the resistancewire inside it that is breaking down I have some spare gauges for two and three clock Smiths instruments if you need one. Is the temp gauge an independent part of the main clock?
