I have been with Flux for several years but this year got a great quote from Footman James as my car is now 15 and qualifies for classic insurance. £250 last year compared to £103.80 this year with unlimited mileage and a couple of modifications. I was chatting to a couple of Leyland Mini club members and it would appear that Footman James arent that cheap if you are under 25 but are very good if you are (a bit) over 25.

I'm waiting for a quote from FJ. Having used them before, when I used to have 4 Minis on one unlimited mileage policy for £127.
HIC (Flux) wanted over £300 for 11000 miles. Lancaster were competitive on an unmodified car, but didn't want to know as soon as I mentioned LCB and Sportex exhaust.
So I'm waiting for FJ to come back in the hope I can get a sensible price! (Being nearly twice 25...)

Following up on this, Footman James are more than competitive if you are a member of the British Mini Club (or agree to join) - it knocks about £200 off the premium!
Everything was simple & straightforward over the phone, unlimited mileage, no worry about the mods, and even quoted as a 1275 as I said I plan to fit one. £159 for the year. Pretty good I think, with a couple of claims blotting my record (not that either had anything to do with my driving! I wasn't even in the car for one of them).

Classic car policy, comp, agreed value, but with unlimited mileage, and including social, domestic, pleasure & commuting (I drive it 25 miles to work each day).
The BMC membership brings it down loads. I only have 1 year's NCD available for use on this policy but that doesn't matter as the classic policies don't acrue NCD anyway.
Oh, and as regards breakdown cover, we found with my daughter that insurance company breakdown cover isn't worth the paper it's written on. Long story but we ended up getting her recovered on our family recovery and taking out RAC cover separately for her. Don't rely on it.

brentacre insurance are fantastic if you have a few mods. knocked socks of Flux and FJ quotes for me, all mods are covered like for like whereas most will only replace with standard parts. and I got a real breakdown policy from them (homestart, recovery, onward journey, europe etc...)

We got our insurance renewal documents through today. We have both cars (the mini and the main family runabout Vauxhall Vectra) on an Admiral Multicar policy. They wanted £600 to renew which seemed a bit excessive to me. With the help of a large operatic singer I got the Vectra quote to just under £300 (this includes the two of us to drive and business use for me). Then I turned to the mini and followed up some of the recommendations in this thread. Got it down to £130 with Footman James. This again is for the two of us, up to 6k miles each year, commuting, mods declared and stored on the drive (not garaged). Saved about £200 overall. Thanks everyone I would recommend that everyone looks at the specialist insurers next time their insurance is due.

just sorted out the insurance renewal for Maggi, £146 fully comp agreed value etc etc ... Not bad for such a modified little Mini ... shame £50 of that is broker and insurance company fees though

I know it is nearly impossible to compare, but over her in Australia, i pay $1100 for my 88 Rover mini insured for $14,000 and $250 for my 74 Leyland Mini insured for $5000 (limited use and garaged) and we only pay $129 for our Morris 850 insured for $16,000 (limited use and club registration) All through Shannons who specialise in classic cars. So with the 08 Nissan Navara, 98 Mitsubishi Magna and 9 minis, we pay about $4000 a year in insurance. All through Shannons.

I reckon we as a family pay about £4000 a year in insurance, but that's largely because we pay the insurances for 18-year-old son and 20-year-old student daughter too - son is £1700 on a C2 and daughter £700 on a Focus TDCi. Next most expensive is the £450 on my VW camper because it has a Rover 3.5 V8 engine! Family bus Previa is a couple of hundred, and the Minis are £159 and £137 unlimited mileage with FJ. When I get some of the others ready I can simply add them to the FJ policy as I know they do multiple cars on them too - I once had 4 Minis on the same FJ policy for no extra cost.

Hi everyone,
I have been reading all of the submissions regarding Insurance. My Mini is a 1996 model so will be 15 years old this coming year - can I clarify, does this mean that it will be eligible for Classic Car Insurance from January 1st 2011? Many thanks, Roger.

Hi Roger
That really depends on the insurance company. Some have a hard and fast rule that it's 15 years from the date of first registration, others are a bit more flexible, some others have different ages (20 or 25 years). I understand that there are some who treat all "classic" (old-style) minis as classic cars. It's best to ring around and see what they say. You're likely to get the best price from a specialist but keep an eye on the conditions (mileage, garaging etc).
hth, Paul.
