Hello people I'm back from my trip now so it's time for me to start asking my questions so here's the first, I'm very new to minis and what I would like to know first of all is what engine would you recommend? and why?

The right engine for you depends on what you want from the car.
Assuming you are talking Mini Autos, there are only really three choices - 998cc, 1098cc (rare) and 1275cc.
998cc is very revvy and I find it a bit underpowered with an Auto. But it's the most economical. 1098cc has a but more power and more useful torque. But it's harder to find coupled to an Auto. 1275cc uses a bit more fuel, but has the best performance due to more power and torque(acceleration). It feels the most modern to drive too, as it generally has the latest type of Auto Box with smoother changes and a Park function.
I'd suggest going for a 1275cc if it's not an embarassment from an insurance point of view.
If you are concerned with saving fuel or insurance costs, go the 998cc or 1098cc.
Regards,

Hey Brett dont forget the 848cc too Though unless you go for a very early mk1 auto i think 998 upwards are better If anybody gets a really early mk1 auto with the 848 cc i think its best keeping it as there arnt that many around now

There will be plenty of choice in 998, slightly less in 1275. The later cars came with 1275 and injection - obviously a little more power, but less easy to repair.
While a 998 is no slouch, they do need working hard up hills and with a full load. The 1275 doesn't suffer from that problem, and solo they can be quite lively (that said, my 998 manuals are quite capable of seeing off many modern cars and kick their asses on roundabouts!)

Regards, To be quite honest, it makes little or no difference here. The only time it might sting you is if the engine is not the same size it left the factory with - insurance companies see that as a modified car. While it's no issue for older drivers - my Sky is insured as a 1275 even though I haven't put it in yet (told the insurers I am going to), £159 a year comp, unlimited mileage and agreed value, no insurer will touch my 18-year-old son for it - though they will cover him for a car that started life as a 1275 for the same premium he paid on a 998.

Sorry Joloke, I forgot abut the 848cc Autos. They were never sold in the antipodes.
It makes little or no difference to insurance here in Aus if your Mini is still a stock A series of some sort. BUt if you start fitting twin-cam heads, turbos etc then the premium normally goes up. But I mentined insurance becase I know it can be a major expense in the UK for a young driver.
Cheers,
