I'm trying to find out a little more about Japanese specification Minis from the 1990's, in particular the post 96 models which in this country had twin point injection etc: As we know automatic transmission was deleted as an option for UK cars when the twin point was introduced but remained available for export models.
I've seen a number of Minis which have made their way back to the UK and appear to have a number of post 97' specifications such as the airbag, moulded carpets etc:
Does anyone have a definitive understanding of the specification of the export model or had sight of a Japanese sales brochure? I'm not sure if the automatic export Mini also had twin point or retained the single point, also if they had the side impact bars etc:
If anyone could shed light on this subject or indeed owns an automatic export Mini, I would be interested to hear.
Many thanks,
Roger.

Further to my previous post. I believe that Rover produced a Mini 35 anniversary model for export only, all of which were finished in dark grey and were all automatic with leather trim; has anyone seen one of these?
Roger.

Many thanks for the above link, - I seem to recall the Mini 35 Export model being featured in one of the Mini Mag's, I shall have to find it. I always thought it was a pity that some of the export features were never made available on UK cars.

There are quite a few Japanese spec post 96 Minis here in Australia.
These cars featured the MPi type block with coil pack ignition (no distributor) and the Marina/Ital type oil filter mount. The intake manifold remained SPi and the side mount radiator was retained. This was allegedly because the front mount radiator did not allow enough clearance for the factory air con most Japanese Minis featured. The EFI computer was also unique and the UK-spec immobiliser was not included.
The Japanese Minis did still have the side impact bars and the interior was essentially the same as UK models. The dash was unique because of the extra A/C vents above the radio and the glovebox was smaller to allow space for the A/C grubbins and control panel beside the radio.
A large proportion of the Japanese Minis were Auto. Auto was available right until the end of sales in Japan.
Cheers,

I have a export spec engine in my Mini Coopersport 500 which I purchased in 2001. It was originally a a manaul but I had the auto engine put in when I bought it. I also have an export auto mpi spare engine and box still crated in storage for when the original gives up.

Mines a December 96, Japanese Kensington Model, has the SPI engine, doesn't have an airbag though, didn't have alarm immobiliser when we bought it, and yup, plenty of A/C gubbins that get in the way when your trying to do stuff on it...

Thanks for the responses above - I see more and more of the export models coming back to the UK these days. They also seems to be in good condition due to the lack of salt used on the roads in Japan. Does anyone have any pictures of their cars to show ?
