I just bought a Rover Mini (90) with an automatic. She seems to be screaming at 65 to 70 mph. Can someone please tell me the RPM at 60 to 70. (no tach)? Also, did I read correctly that the engine oil and transmission fluid is the same? Sorry for my ignorance but I learn quickly. Thank you

Hi and welcome to AMR. We are always here to help - that's how we all learn - so fire away with your questions. Being a 1990 model I assume that it's a 998cc. Mine does 70mph around 5,000 rpm. The engine's not screaming at that speed - very noisy but not screaming. Yes the engine and transmission share engine oil. Some good advice on checking the oil and what grade to use here: www.mra-minis.co.uk/c/knowledge-base/classic-mini/automatic/Paul

Actually it's a 1.3 engine (allegedly) with automatic and Air conditioning. Can I run it that hard on the expressway for a couple of hundred miles or so ? I read your click info and what ever else I could find, seems like 20w 50w is the way to go. What about a tach, have any ideas as to where to place it and what to buy? Would like something that looks good.

I was just going to ask this question. I drove a '69 Ford truck with a 4 speed V8 that *topped out* at 3500 RPM so just rolling along at 60 MPH doing 4000 RPM made my skin crawl the first time I drove my mini that fast. What's the RPM range for these engines? (Mine's a 998cc as well)

So I found one forum that says that 6500 RPM should be the safe limit but kicking it up to 7000 or 7500 is ok for short bursts and one person claims that 9000 RPM on downshifts is just fine. I'm skeptical.

Hi Supersamurai, welcome to AMR.
Auto Mini engines are revvy little things. The red line on my tacho is at 5,800 rpm and to be honest it never gets there. 70mph is around 5,000 - after that there's not a lot left for the engine to give. Rolling along at 4,000rpm/60mph is not going to be a problem.
I think you're right to be skeptical about these other claims. Unless it's had a rebuild your engine is a number of years old and may not take kindly to that level of punishment.

Yes, a little 998 Mini engine is a hugely different beast to a V8 (I know, I have both!)
6500 rpm is the limit that is suggested. They will go higher but it's not a good idea.
