I installed a 1275 engine with automatic transmission from a 1989 MG Metro into my 1968 Austin America.
On the newer transmission there is a copper colored dome shaped part threaded into the low pressure valve. This part does not exist on the original transmission. When you unthread the copper colored dome shaped part there is what appears to be a needle valve and a spring.
I broke the copper colored dome shaped part and bent the needle valve.
Does anyone know where I can get these parts?
Is this part necessary? It does not exist on the original transmission. Can I eliminate this part and just plug the hole it screws into?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dave

Hi Ray, The part is just below the torque converter and just above where the gear selector cable connects. It is approx. 5/8" in diameter and about 1 1/8" long. It is copper or brass and screws into the low pressure valve at a 90 degree angle, so it sticks right out. If your engine has one it would be impossible not to notice it when you look just below the torque converter.
I'm going to a British Car Show in Stowe, Vermont, USA this weekend. I'm praying that I come across the part there but I think it's unlikely as automatics are uncommon and this is the first automatic that I ever saw with this part.
If you happen to have this part are you willing to sell it?

Dave. Since you have an America, send me some detailed pics and I will look them over. I will also run it by the guys in our BMC1100 group. I too am going to a show tomorrow. It's the big British Car Day in Bronte park Burlington, Ontario.

Hi notamini, I emailed you some photos of the part. I couldn't figure out how to post the photos. If anyone can tell me how to insert a photo I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Dave

This is a thermal device only fitted to Metro's, it won't actually fit in a Mini, and I am not sure if it will fit in an 1100/1300 (America), however you can simply remove it and as long as you have 2 springs everything will be ok, just fit your old low pressure valve.

If you still need one, then I do have some still available.

Thank you Martin. I had given up on finding this part and made a substitute part that has been working find. I received your part today. FYI this part does not fit in the America. When I installed the Metro engine I drilled a hole in the America's sub-frame to make clearance for it. Thanks again. Dave

Ah, this is my thing with a spring! (Necro posting, but found my way back here through googling to find what on earth I'd broken..).
Am curious as to what "remove it as long as there's 2 springs" means - Ie, what 2 springs, and where do they go?
This could see me motivated into getting the Allegro back together, if I can either replace said thing (I can grind a bit out the cover, and I think the rest has enough clearance in the car) or better still, work around having said thing.

This might be a bit late, however replace the aluminium valve assembly (5 x 1/4" UNC bolts under the converter) with ine from a later Mini, when you strip it down it will have either 1 spring or 2 .... you need the 2 spring version

Years ago I put a metro auto engine in my 74 mini. I broke the part you are talking about. Didn't find out until I was driving it home and sprayed oil all over the car behind me. MY wife was following me. I pulled the part off the engine in the 74 and put it on the metro trans and all was good. I know the engine and trans from the mini were not original though. I don't even remember if it was A+ or not.

I don't even remember if it was A+ or not. They are interchangeable, as they all do a similar job, but the later the better, as they have been "tweaked" over the years and the improvements are all beneficial to controlling the pressure within the torque convertor, which aids slow running by maintaining that pressure and also lubricating the main gear set, the later unit and the metro version are the same apart from the thermostatic section which maintains oil pressure when the oil is hot, the Mini variant doesn't know if the oil is hot or not but we all know hotter oil will normally give rise to a lower pressure....
