Looks like a good start look forward to seeing it finished, did you find it easy to cut?

Post by joakwin on Aug 11, 2010 21:33:13 GMT
yeah, i cut it by hand, i started to cut it with a jig saw but that was kind of chipping it, from cutting it to fast, so i used a hack saw and a hand sander to get the line straight
i need to make the mounts will but im probably gonna drill holes and use the screws for the dash vents as the top mounts
it was a pain in the butt to de-seam that one side fully, friday im gonna do the left side, but its half way done already, and then i got to repair another panel also that day but i went and got a small sealey shot blaster with a 25kg bag so im gonna get that panel rust free before welding it up
and then not sure when im gonna get time to start de-seaming the rear of the car

Youv'e been quite busy recently. I have often wondered what exactly is involved in de-seaming. How is it done?
|
|
|
Post by joakwin on Aug 12, 2010 17:31:44 GMT
cut about 3inches of the seam off and weld it and then cut another 3inch, weld it and keep on going
when i cut the 3inches, i made cuts at the top/middle/bottom, and welded it, and did it like that for the hole side, and then i grinded it down to smooth out the weld,
its a pain in the butt and takes alot of time, but i like the look alot so im putting in the time
no work done on the car today as it has rained most of the day

got the passenager side de-seamed in the front, and the body work about 90% done on that, just needs the fine sanding, but i got it primed matt black right now tho and got about 90% of the drivers side rear de-seamed
tomorrow im going to go and get my roll cage for the car, im pretty jazzed about that

Glad you had good day. Would have liked to have made it myself but too busy Looks like I will be free for the National Mini Show on September 12 though There are a few sun visors on Ebay. I picked up a used one the other day to replace one that had collapsed on my car. It was just a couple of quid. There are some new ones available on Ebay but they are over £30 including delivery. There's even one company on there that will make them in whatever colour you want. Somorford Minis had some last week when I was looking at their web site too.

You have been busy. It looks kind of odd without the seams and gutter, ss you normally see them with them

Sounds and looks like you have been very busy since I last read this post. It's looking good and I have to agree with Chris that it looks abit odd without the seams and gutters but it does look good

gonna be without bumpers also soon, i need to get more cut off wheels, i got one left and with the amount of shaving i want to do/have left, i think i need about 10more to be good
picked up a pair of 12in JBL subs for the system, i need to get the tape measure out so i can design a box to fit in the boot

i got about 18inches or so more to go and the roof line will be shaved off all the way
and i shaved off the front bumper and i did alittle more on the rear bumper but not much on that
i also cleaned up the interior on the car, its stripped down, got the floors and rear seat area flat black
in the next few days i plan to get the roof inside flat black and whatever else is needed also
ones im done with shving the car, im gonna pull the subframe and rack and sand blast the firewall

Are you going to sandblast it yourself? The sand goes everywhere
|

|
Post by joakwin on Sept 14, 2010 15:31:24 GMT
yeah ive been sand blasting the rust spots, to clean them up and cut out the bad metal and to have a good clean metal to weld on, but yeah, im gonna do the firewall myself, i got about 50kgs of the blasting sand stuff, about 4weeks ago or so i found one of those small portable sandblasters on sale and then i got about 2qts of the rust paint, and then im gonna put some truck bed liner on it
i ordered 2gallons of diy bed liner from the states
the only rust i got left on the car is the lower front valance, where its all beat up at, but im soon to be cutting off that panel and fitting a rear valance to the front in its place
i went to my local mini shop and picked up another rear valance today, and when i got home i did a quick mock up and it seems that im gonna have to section about 1inch out of the center for it to fit right, (not a big deal) and cut the lip off the top to flush weld it in
i need to get some cut off wheels before i can cut the old panel off and whatnot

I use the kiln dried sand from B&Q about £3 for 25kgs. don't give it extended blasting in one spot as it work hardens the metal. Oh, and wear a full face shield , dust mask and gloves as you'll end up sandblasting your face and hands. Cotton wool in your ears to keep it out of there too.

Impressed with all the safety gear. It's coming along nicely now. What's the cut away in the bottom of the front valance. Oil Cooler?

Post by joakwin on Sept 18, 2010 19:14:38 GMT
i cut out the front subframe mount from the body on the right side, still need to do the left side one, i had to cut the valance in half because i need to take about 2-3inches out of it because its to wide, so i need to make a front body mount and make some bars to braces the front of the subframe up, but since i don't have a engine in the car its not a big deal, just have to do it before i get a engine
most of the time i wear safety glasses under the sheild, and one of those small paper filter thingys but im out of the paper filters and i sometimes get lazy and don't wear the safety glasses under the face shield, and i always wear safety glasses under my welding mask

The final push! You'll get a real sense of achievement when it's finally finished.
It would be great to see some pictures of it completely seamless.
