Managed to get Nemo through the MOT on Monday. Failed on Saturday (after a week of welding new sills on!); a bulb, headlamp alignment (how the tester missed the stone hole in the glass I don't know, had to borrow another quadoptic from Skye!), a leaky exhaust and a trailing arm beginning to seize. Cleaning and greasing the shaft itself was a doddle; just getting the arm off that was a PITA! Welded in a new section of exhaust tube as the box itself is perfect, and new ticket it is.

Couldn't cope without mine! Modded SIP130 (drive clamp mod + Eurotorch conversion running 11kg pub gas). It has a hard life!

I started out with the Clarke 150TE but the wire drive got a but uneven. I've now got a Portamig 180using the 10 kg argon mix. The wire drive on the Portamig is great. Once you've set the wire speed it stays there if you increase or decrease the amperage the drive automatically adjusts the wire speed to match.

Point taken, I got the wrong section. What have I done on my Mini? Driven it, as usual!

We emptied all of our personal stuff out of Pootle. Then checked the fluid levels as she's being picked up later. Time to say goodbye...

Me an the other half spent half the day finishing the bottom dash rail and fitting Molly's new carpet which wasn't easy. You're now thinking why?? Well I ordered my carpet from a local car upholsterers and got it back and thought all would be easy simply put it in, oh no!!! We were putting the different parts in and we had to trim nearly very single piece of carpet. Then we had to put the centre console in which was slightly easier but still had to take it apart to get in it. I will take and upload a pic tomorrow

I have just got back from picking PUD up after having a newly recon gearbox and newly recon engine fitted to him. Nervous drive home , expecting allsorts of weird noises and smoke to come out from the bonnet, but sailed home and goes in all gears forwards and backwards even when hot , something which the old engine had taken a dislike to. Thanks again Martin.

Yeah it was a great day, about 400 cars out, just about 26 degrees out, which is surprisiingly warm for the end of winter!

Today I fitted the new arches to Nemo to replace those the scrotes ripped off. Thanks to PL Minis for supplying from stock when Minisport couldn't. And Screwfix for supplying the nuts for a fraction of what B&Q charge!
I also replaced one of the knackered engine steady bushes on Skye with a poly one also from PL. I'd have done both but I couldn't get the bolt out of the back one (it's not so bad anyway) and there's not much room on a servo'd car!

Today, a mini-tune up on Skye. With some nasty surprises found. I started off changing the thermostat as the temp gauge has been struggling to climb above cold lately and I need some heat for the winter! First nasty shock: oil in the coolant.
So I started checking over other things. Valve clearances - some were a bit tight so I think I need to check for valve seat recession, then a compression test, which with 190-160-160-190 points to a probable head gasket failure between 2 & 3.
Then I checked the points gap and timing; adjusting the dwell angle to be right made a difference to the timing which I adjusted, but then I found no vacuum advance! On testing it looks as though the advance diaphragm has gone, so I've fitted an advance unit from an older dizzy (figuring that any vac advance is better than none!)
Strangely enough the car has been running fine, so I had no idea there was anything wrong.
Looks like my half-term will be spent swapping a head gasket (and if that doesn't work, dropping in a 1275 lump) and that Nissan dizzy conversion that I have been putting off for months!

I've been fighting to try and get the exhaust off. The y-piece has a small hole in the top, and some previous owner has welded all the exhaust sections together. I'd like to meet the person that did it - and punch him. Why the hell would you weld the y-piece to the LCB downpipes? If you were worried about them separating (which I've never known) a tack would hold it. But they've seamed the bottom half of each join, welding the clamps to the exhaust in the process! 3 hours with grinder & dremel and still can't get it apart. I gave up in the end and put some gun-gum on the hole.
I'm going to have to get a new LCB because I'm going to have to cut this one to get the y-piece off. Actually, instead, I think I'll just complete my original plan and drop the 1275 in it, as I have a 1275 LCB in the shed and a spare exhaust to go with it.
