Ooh, that's nice! Tight as you say, but it will be even better when you get it running!
Clubbys have a bit more space; ironically mine are staying with standard(ish) engines! I've a set of twin HS2s ready for my GT - not quite twin HIF44s, but better than a single HS4 I think.

A pair of HS2's are certainly better than a single HS4. I fitted a pair to my daughter's mini and bottom end power is better.

I managed to get the exhaust headers on last night. Getting them on was not too much of a problem. Thanks for the advice Carl. I'd never have got them on with any steadies fitted. The worst bit was tightening the bottom nuts. No4 was easy and got progressively more awkard towards No.1 which took forever. Here's a couple of photos of what they look like; At the moment the pipes are actually touching the bulkhead. I'll be able to adjust the engine when I fit the steadies. But it will be close at the front and the back. Here's a piccie of the bit I bought at Uttoxeter last week

That is tight! Your steadies will have to be perfect!

Apart from the standard steady to the top of the block There will be three on the gearbox and maybe I might make one to go from the exhaust studs to the bulkhead box section. I've had a measure and when the headers are touching the bulkhead I've 8mm clearance on the throttle bodies, so that gives me 4mm back and front. Tight. I managed to get all the front end back together yesterday. Pot joints, CV joints brakes, track rod ends and suspension all back in one piece. It would have been quicker if I'd fitted the long drive shaft instead of the short one to the O/S. I picked up the long one, put it down then picked up the short one by mistake and wonderd why it would not go fully into the hub. Had it all to take out and do it again. Hoping to get the wheels on today and get it off the axle stands. Also the remote gearchange

a bit of an update. I've finally managed to get the Greenie back on its wheels. I could not believe the gap at the top of the wheel arch as it's not been cut away there and the adjusta rides are set at the lowest setting. I measured the distance and it's 4". At least know it's on four wheels. Iwas hoping to get the remote change back in but it will have to wait till tomorrow as I've just painted the rods.

I've managed to get a bit more done. The gearbox remote unit is now in as is the clutch slave cylinder, master cylinder and brake servo, along with the problematical wipers. I now have a working clutch and gearbox. The engine steadies are all in, two from the back of the box to the rear of the front subframeand the front of the gearbox to the front of the front subframe and the normal one to the top of the block. Alsolutely rock steady. The wipers would not fit when I came to put them back in, the wiper stubs were 1/2" too short. It took a while to figure it out. I'd straightened the centre tube. Bending it splayed out the stubs and they fitted easily. I also got the rear wiper fitted too.

I've been making the new seat brackets. I've got the drivers side one done and I'm half way through the passenger side. I was bleeding the brakes on Saturday and the last to bleed was the O/S front calliper and the nipple sheared off. I'm off to Minimine today to get it removed. I also noticed that when I fitted the gear box remote I forgot the concertina rubber cover so it has to come off again. I've managed to get the MPI tank in and connected up. I ran out of pipe at the engine end from the rigid pipe to the fuel rail.

I finished making the seat bases last night, to take the Alfa seats. Minimine did manage to get the broken bleed nipple out for me. The calliper been repainted, as the gas torch did burn some paint off, and will be back on tonight. I'm going to replace the bleed nipple in the other calliper too.

You've been very busy! that looks fantastic, especially since what you have done isn't a common thing (at least not over here in Oz) but your going great guns! Can't wait to see the finished product! Alfa seats? what a great idea!

I just happen to have quite a bit of S/S tube in 1" and 2" knocking about. I got a roll of S/S wire for the MIG and made them up. The nuts are welded inside the tube as a captive nut.

Hiya chris As you know I haven't been around much as I haven't been well how's the Greenie coming along? Any more pics yet? Lea

Hi Lea, I'm sorry to hear that you are still not 100%. I hope you soon are. I've had a weeks holiday and I've not done anything since I got back at the weekend. I'm going to fit the exhaust this weekend and try to get the bottom hose and radiator on. This is more difficult than usual as I've to make up the bottom hose so as to clear the cam belt. There's no room to get your hands in. No more piccies yet but there should be some next week.

I can't beleive the progress you have made since I have last been on, it looks absolutely brill and I found this so interesting to read and I can't wait for the next update.

I have been busy on the Greenie, honest. It's just that the progress now is not quite as obvious. I've got the fuel tank in rear lights and the boot lid on. I've also managed to get the exhaust fastened in. I ordered some proper felt underlay as sound deadening and insulation for the roof. It was delivered today and I've got quite a lot of it. I've now got the new head linging and a set of Quadoptics headlights and bowls. So I should keep busy for a while now.

this is what the underfelt was for Really good sound deadening and insulation. I've managed to get the radiator back in. The bottom hose had to be "Tailored" and was a real nightmare. Fuel regulator has been fitted too. Just waiting for more fuel, heater hose and hose to make up the radiator top pipe. The air scoop thing would not fit as the coil pack is in the way so that had to be modified too.

I managed to get some more done. The pipes for th top hose have been fitted. It's a bit convoluted as the radiator and out let are too close to connect directly aspecially as there a s big lump with the thermostat in and a seperate water temperature guage, independant of the one for the ECU. the heater is back in too. Just got to connect the return pipe to the bottom hose.

It's coming along great guns. Soon be finished. That engine looks tighter every time I look at it. How are your knuckles?

Progress has been going on but nothing that would warrant a progress report. I've altered the top hose run to shorten it a bit. I could have got it a lot shorter but not with the temperature sender unit in the line. I've moved the fuel pressure regulator too. The wiring is almost complete too. I'll get the steering column back in tonight and hopefully test the fuel system and pressure. I'll have to go and get some petrol later today. Just got the heater to connect up and fill the engine with oil and water. Hopefully it will be firing up on Saturday

I will video it when it fires. I got the steering column in last night and found that the plug for the ignition switch is a Mk3 and the new loom is a Mk4. Got to get a new ignition switch, although I can cobble the wiring to fire it up if necessary.

Well it has all been a bit of a disappointment today. I tried to connect the fuel pump up last night but it kept blowing fuses. The fuel tank plug was wired the wrong way so that the live was connected to the earth. Changed the connections over and was still to earth. I've taken the fuel tank out and removed the fuel pump unit and is definitely goosed. So no fire up today. I've managed to fill it with oil and prime the pump and had it spinning on the starter. Just got to order a new pump now

The new uprated fuel pump arrived late this morning. Now fitted and tank back in. fuel pump has been fired up and fuel rail pressure set at 3 Bar. finally managed to get the top hose as I would like it. The temperature sender is now screwed into the thermostat housing, as I had a 1/8" NPT tap. I need to change one of the bends but I can do that later. Dashboard balnk has been cut, at the third attempt I'm hoping for the big fire up tomorrow if the battery and jumpstart pack can turn it over. I'll attach the digital dash and ECU tomorrow and we'll see. A new battery is on it's way with 600 CCA available. That should be man enough to spin it.

Well, the battery arrived yesterday afternoon. I went through them all and cleaned them some more a couple looked like they could be improved. I fitted a second earth strap to the gearbox. When I changed the battery one of the connectors was not too tight either. Put the new battery and it spun over fine and started up. Sounded lumpy and missing on one cylinder a bit for a few seconds then settled down. Sounds good not too noisy. Then, a horrible screeching grinding noise. Switched off and had a look round. Could not see anything obvious, so fired it up again. OK for about 10 seconds and then the same noise. Sounded to be coming from the starter motor. Took the starter off and had a look. The teeth on the starter were fine but the teeth on the back of the ring gear looked as though they were catching on something. Put the starter back and fired up, same thing again after about 5 seconds. Took starter motor off again. No damage at all to the starter teeth. Looks like a loose bolt in there. Might have to lift the engine out to fix it. I'll speak to SC today. Another Crewe's missile did the video thing for me I'll try and get it on you tube today. Oh and by the way it sounded really good when it settled down. Apologies for length of post.

Its always a stressful time when its the first fire-up on a fresh engine. With any luck it'll be an easy to reach , slightly too long a bolt . I'm keen to hear how it sounds. Shrapnel

I've been trying to upload the video but the broadband keeps stopping. I'll get the video up as soon as I can. It has been suggested that the clutch slave cylinder bolts are too long, lets hope so. Here's the link, I hope it works. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ntu5CH782o
